Last night I experienced a Fort Worth subculture that I had no idea existed.
My little bro plays bass in a band out of Denton called This Old House. They are really great and talented, and the next time you read here that they are playing around Cowtown, it would make me so happy if you'd check them out. Anyway, last night they were invited to play at Mambo's Cantina downtown. It was not so random since they are making the rounds in venues around the state.
What was random is that upon arriving, we discovered that on Wednesday nights, Mambo's hosts a webcast by a DFW DJ named John Rody who apparently was popular on The Zoo back in the 70s and 80s. It's more of a variety show webcast, I guess, with Rody chatting up the crowd, shaming some into singing karaoke (others are willing participants), taking phone calls from around the state, and featuring a local musical guest. Honestly, it was somewhat reminiscent of Wayne's World.
I don't think I've laughed so much in a long time. There is definitely a lot of audience participation, and clearly many of the folks there are Wednesday night (and karaoke) regulars. While it's PG-13, it's definitely an interesting way to hear some DFW artists that you might otherwise never experience.
